I just arrived home from my very first Fincon and I am inspired and exhausted at the same time. Fincon is a conference for the money media community. I have known about Fincon since 2014 but since I had not started my blog or business, I just sat back and watched from the sidelines. This year I was able to attend and learned so much in 4 days. Here are 5 of the many things I learned:
1. Volunteering is a great way to meet people.
I volunteered at the check-in desk on Day 1 so I could get the opportunity to meet people and have a little fun. I had so much fun volunteering, I was partnered with Amber Berry of Feel Good Finances. It was Amber’s second year at Fincon, she was so helpful and sweet. She even made me go LIVE on Periscope on her channel (follow her) and then we went live on my Instagram.
2. Everyone is willing to help.
Everyone was so nice, open, transparent and willing to help. I met so many people who provided actionable steps to help me expand my business. My roommate Shaniqua Harrell of Opulence Financial showed me where I was leaving money on the table. She was right so it’s about to be on, especially since I want to retire early. Latisha Styles held an impromptu session to help us with marketing our products and services and Jalesa Ann Harrison of My Money Mogul actually sat down with me talk to about business. These ladies were not required to take their time to help but they did and I have heard similar stories in the Fincon community.
3. There are different markets I can focus on.
I focus on helping professional women but there are different types of professional women out there and some of those women are in the same place I was in 10, 5 or maybe even 3 years ago. Since I have already been there, I can help them and that is exactly what I plan to do. As I have said before, I want everyone to win, I refuse to accept that women of color will have a net worth of $5. We can change our future.
4. I need to build up my side hustles again.
I knew this already but after speaking to Shaniqua about everything I have done in the past, and she told me how much I could really be doing, I realized I could achieve my goals faster. So I will be ramping up my side hustles (I will talk about them here) since I want to pay off my student loan and my home.
5. Consistency, Consistency, Consistency.
I need to consistently work Financialdemics. Especially when it comes to promoting my content. I will be working on building an arsenal of content so there’s new content dropping weekly.
6. The amount of swag you get is real. (Bonus)
I read in the Facebook Fincon Group that you should bring an extra bag for your swag and I did but I didn’t expect to be struggling to close the bag especially since I left some stuff behind. I hope they like the cowboy hat. My husband and the kid definitely enjoyed the some of it (the kid loved these socks even though he claims he’s not a kid).
7. You can sit anywhere on Southwest. (Bonus)
This was my first time flying on Southwest Airlines.I was so excited to finally fly to Fincon on Southwest that I didn’t check my ticket for my seat assignment until I was getting on the plane. I asked the flight attendant and she told me they don’t have seat assignments so I can sit anywhere. Here was the problem with that, I normally get on the plane later, on purpose, so I don’t have to sit for too long, which means I ended up in a middle seat. It wasn’t too bad but I made sure I got on the plane in my boarding order on the way back.
So these are the 5 7 things I learned from attending Fincon, now it’s time to take action.
